    Spectral and Temporal Variability of Earth Observed in Polarization

    We present a comprehensive set of spectropolarimetric observations of Earthshine as obtained by FORS2 at the VLT for phase angles from 50degree to 135degree (Sun-Earth-Moon angle), covering a spectral range from 430nm to 920nm. The degree of polarization in BVRI passbands, the differential polarization vegetation index, and the equivalent width of the O2A polarization band around 760nm are determined with absolute errors around 0.1 percent in the degree of polarization. Earthshine polarization spectra are corrected for the effect of depolarization introduced by backscattering on the lunar surface, introducing systematic errors of the order of 1 percent in the degree of polarization. Distinct viewing sceneries such as observing the Atlantic or Pacific side in Earthshine yield statistically different phase curves. The equivalent width defined for the O2A band polarization is found to vary from -5nm to +2nm. A differential polarized vegetation index is introduced and reveals a larger vegetation signal for those viewing sceneries that contain larger fractions of vegetated surface areas. We corroborate the observed correlations with theoretical models from the literature, and conclude that the Vegetation Red Edge(VRE) is a robust and sensitive signature in polarization spectra of planet Earth. The overall behaviour of polarization of planet Earth in the continuum and in the O2A band can be explained by existing models. Biosignatures such as the O2A band and the VRE are detectable in Earthshine polarization with a high degree of significance and sensitivity. An in-depth understanding of Earthshines temporal and spectral variability requires improved models of Earths biosphere, as a prerequisite to interpret possible detections of polarised biosignatures in earthlike exoplanets in the future.Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 3 table

    Tunneling conductance and local density of states in time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors under the influence of an external magnetic field

    We consider different effects that arise when time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors are subjected to an external magnetic field, thus rendering the superconductor to be in the mixed state. We focus in particular on two time-reversal symmetry breaking order parameters which are believed to be realized in actual materials: p+\i p'-wave and d+\i s- or d+\i d'-wave. The first order parameter is relevant for Sr2_2RuO4_4, while the latter order parameters have been suggested to exist near surfaces in some of the high-TcT_c cuprates. We investigate the interplay between surface states and vortex states in the presence of an external magnetic field and their influence on both the tunneling conductance and the local density of states. Our findings may be helpful to experimentally identify the symmetry of unconventional time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting states.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Total order in opportunistic networks

    Opportunistic network applications are usually assumed to work only with unordered immutable messages, like photos, videos, or music files, while applications that depend on ordered or mutable messages, like chat or shared contents editing applications, are ignored. In this paper, we examine how total ordering can be achieved in an opportunistic network. By leveraging on existing dissemination and causal order algorithms, we propose a commutative replicated data type algorithm on the basis of Logoot for achieving total order without using tombstones in opportunistic networks where message delivery is not guaranteed by the routing layer. Our algorithm is designed to use the nature of the opportunistic network to reduce the metadata size compared to the original Logoot, and even to achieve in some cases higher hit rates compared to the dissemination algorithms when no order is enforced. Finally, we present the results of the experiments for the new algorithm by using an opportunistic network emulator, mobility traces, and Wikipedia pages.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    With the approval of the first therapeutic cancer vaccines for veterinarian and human use, the field reached a significant milestone after a considerable interval of tumultuous research and development marked by numerous ups and downs. As the mechanism of action and clinical benefit afforded by this class of agents are starkly different from that of conventional or small targeted therapies for cancer, there are still numerous hurdles that need to be overcome to fully unleash their potential. These challenges and efforts are illustrated in a book just published on this subject, a non-exhaustive yet representative synopsis of the latest advances in cancer vaccine technologies in various stages of development. Major lessons resulting from clinical testing of cancer vaccines and other immune interventions, are being integrated in novel, cutting edge platform technologies that blur the distinction between passive and active immunotherapies as well as carry the promise of fundamentally changing and improving the management of patients with cancer

    Vascular neurocognitive disorders and the vascular risk factors

    Dementias are clinical neurodegenerative diseases characterized by permanent and progressive transformation of cognitive functions such as memory, learning capacity, attention, thinking, language, passing judgments, calculation or orientation. Dementias represent a relatively frequent pathology, encountered at about 10% of the population of 65-year olds and 20% of the population of 80-year olds. This review presents the main etiological forms of dementia, which include Alzheimer form of dementia, vascular dementia, dementia associated with alpha-synucleionopathies, and mixed forms. Regarding vascular dementia, the risk factors are similar to those for an ischemic or hemorrhagic cerebrovascular accident: arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, smoking, obesity, age, alcohol consumption, cerebral atherosclerosis/ arteriosclerosis. Several studies show that efficient management of the vascular risk factors can prevent the expression and/ or progression of dementia. Thus, lifestyle changes such as stress reduction, regular physical exercise, decreasing dietary fat, multivitamin supplementation, adequate control of blood pressure and serum cholesterol, and social integration and mental stimulation in the elderly population are important factors in preventing or limiting the symptoms of dementia, a disease with significant individual, social, and economic implications

    Aerogel-Positronium Technology for the Detection of Small Quantities of Organic and/or Toxic Materials

    The Ps-aerogel system [Ps is positronium (an electron-positron-hydrogen-like atom)] has been evaluated and optimized as a potential tool for planetary exploration missions. Different configurations of use were assessed, and the results provide a quantitative measure of the expected performance. The aerogel density is first optimized to attain maximum production of Ps that reaches the pores of the aerogel. This has been accomplished, and the optimum aerogel density is .70 mg/cm3. The aerogel is used as a concentrator for target volatile moieties, which accumulate in its open porosity over an extended period of time. For the detection of the accumulated materials, the use of Ps as a probe for the environment at the pore surface, has been proposed. This concept is based on two steps: (1) using aerogel to produce Ps and (2) using the propensity of Ps to interact differently with organic and inorganic matter. The active area of such a detector will comprise aerogel with a certain density, specific surface area, and gas permeability optimized for Ps production and gas diffusion and adsorption. The aerogel is a natural adsorber of organic molecules, which adhere to its internal surface, where their presence is detected by the Ps probe. Initial estimates indicate that, e.g., trace organic molecules in the Martian atmosphere, can be detected at the ppm level, which rivals current methods having significantly higher complexity, volume, mass, and power consumption (e.g. Raman, IR)

    On the connectivity of graph Lipscomb's space

    A central role in topological dimension theory is played by Lipscomb's space JAJ_{A} since it is a universal space for metric spaces of weight A0|A|\geq \aleph _{0}. On the one hand, Lipscomb's space is the attractor of a possibly infinite iterated function system, i.e. it is a generalized Hutchinson-Barnsley fractal. As, on the other hand, some classical fractal sets are universal spaces, one can conclude that there exists a strong connection between topological dimension theory and fractal set theory. A generalization of Lipscomb's space, using graphs, has been recently introduced (see R. Miculescu, A. Mihail, Graph Lipscomb's space is a generalized Hutchinson-Barnsley fractal, Aequat. Math., \textbf{96} (2022), 1141-1157). It is denoted by J_{A}^{\G} and it is called graph Lipscomb's space associated with the graph \G on the set AA. It turns out that it is a topological copy of a generalized Hutchinson-Barnsley fractal. This paper provides a characterization of those graphs \G for which J_{A}^{\G} is connected.
